Purposes of the Law
The Abrahamic Covenant covenanted for a physical seed and a physical land. The Covenant of Circumcision was a token of that covenant. Moses’ Law was given to Abraham’s covenanted seed.
The Mosaic Covenant served numerous purposes:
A. The oracles/commandments (Ac 7:38; Rom 2:1-2) of the Lord to and for the Jew
Rom 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law:
B. A ruler for sin
Rom 3:20 …for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Gal 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
C. The means of the righteousness of God for the Jew
Deut 6:25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.
Psalm 119:172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.
Rom 9:31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Phil 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
D. A spokesman of things to come
Mat 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
E. A schoolmaster leading to salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Definitions & Review
In the chapter titled "the righteousness of God with the law", KJB definition is given to what is meant that God is righteous and to the term ‘righteousness’ itself.
KJB Definition: God is righteous – The LORD is right in all his ways. (Psalms 145:17)
KJB Definition: Righteousness – Doing or being right from God’s perspective.
Also, in same chapter, the core elements of the law are demonstrated to be God giving Israel the law in the form of commandments, judgments, laws, oracles, ordinances, precepts, statutes, etc., that Israel would be righteous in all that she would do (Dt 6:25).
Of all the purposes, listed that the law served, the one purpose that is outright denied by most preachers, teachers and commentaries, is that of the Mosaic Covenant being the righteousness of God, for the Jew, under the law. A reason for this denial, as stated elsewhere within this Theme Study, is not discerning the difference between justification ‘by faith and ‘through faith’, as presented in a KJB. If one denies the principal of justification 'by faith', as found under the OT, then one must argue against this function of the law!
In this chapter it is going to be proved that there are two bonding elements that make up righteousness, which is ‘by faith’, under the law. It is going to be shown that if either of these bonding elements is absent, then righteousness which is ‘by faith’, is no longer a valid justification.
In this Theme Study, ‘by faith’ is defined as: A believing diligence (faithfulness) towards a faithful God of reward. This definition is defined in chapter titled, "by faith". It is stated, on the Home Page, that under the Old Testament a just man was one who was righteous before the LORD and that imputed righteousness was based on faithful obedience. This is clearly illustrated in the lives of the parents of John the Baptist who were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless… thus, being just before God.
Luke 1:5-6 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Zacharias. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
-

-

Ezekiel 18:9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
-

-

-

Not only is justification and righteousness ‘by faith’ under law clearly defined in a KJB, but contrast given to it from that righteousness, which is ‘of faith’, found in Romans 10, makes further distinction indisputable!

Romans 10:5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

Romans 10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

A Remarkable Comparison
in Roman’s 10, there is a remarkable comparison between the two means of righteousness. Righteousness, which is ‘of faith’, is covered in the counter chapter, to this chapter and titled, "righteousness which is of faith". Here it is simply shown that in scripturally giving distinction, Paul cleverly interweaves the two in distinguishing between each.
righteousness which is of the law
Romans 10:5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
Deuteronomy 30:11-15 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. 15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;

righteousness which is of faith
Romans 10:6-10 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
-
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach
Two Inseparable Components
Law & Believing Diligence
Reminding the reader of the definition of ‘by faith’ as being… ‘A believing diligence (faithfulness) towards a faithful God of reward.’, two components of ‘righteousness, which is of the law’, is seen in Romans 10:5 that is repeated throughout the Old Testament.
Romans 10:5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
-
righteousness which is of the law
-
the man which doeth those things
-
shall live by them
Leviticus 18:5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.
-
Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments
-
which if a man do
-
he shall live in them
Nehemiah 9:29 And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.
-
yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments
-
(which if a man do, he shall live in them;)
Ezekiel 20:11 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
-
I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments
-
which if a man do, he shall even live in them
Ezekiel 20:13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.
-
But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments
-
which if a man do, he shall even live in them
Ezekiel 20:21 Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.
-
the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them
-
which if a man do, he shall even live in them
A. The Law
Do's & Don'ts
Clearly being demonstrated is that the righteousness, which is of the law, was dependent upon two factors, the commandments being one of the two components. There is a definite ‘don’t’ and ‘do’ instruction. The don’t relates to the doings and ordinances of Egypt, from which Israel was just delivered, and Canaan the direction in which the LORD was directing them.
The ‘do’ instructions, heading into Canaan, were the ‘my judgments’, ‘my statutes’ and ‘mine ordinances’ relayed to Israel through Moses.
Leviticus 18:1-5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God. 3 After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances. 4 Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. 5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.
-
After the doings of the land of Egypt… shall ye not do:
-
and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances
-
Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein:
-
I am the LORD your God. Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments
B. Believing Diligence
Loving the LORD they God...
The other compound to ‘righteousness which is of the law’, was walking and living by/in those judgments, statutes and ordinances. The Pentateuch and Old Testament aren't silent on what exactly this living experience was to look like.
Deuteronomy 6:1-6 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: 2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
-
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
-
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
-
And these words, which I command thee this day
-
shall be in thine heart
‘By faith’ definition of a ‘believing diligence’ towards a faithful God of reward for Israel now, under the Mosaic Covenant, is defined as... loving the LORD their God with all their heart, soul and mind with God’s commandments in their heart.
These two components, of the righteousness which is of the law, MUST NOT and CANNOT be separated! In doing so, God’s righteousness which is of the law, ceases to be Israel’s righteousness! When Israel walked in the ordinances of other nations, in forsaking the law, Israel’s righteousness ceased! When Israel obeyed elements of the law without sincerity and with hypocrisy, Israel’s righteousness ceased! God’s righteousness was only reflected by Israelites faithfully being obedient to the law.
Matthew 15:7-9 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
-
their heart is far from me
The Mosaic Covenant
A Living Righteousness
It should be clearly understood that the hard copy or verbalization of the commandments, laws, judgments, ordinances, precepts and statutes, where dead in themselves and the circumcised had to provide the life thereof. The righteousness of God, which was of the law, had to be lived out…
Romans 7:10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
-
the commandment
-
which was ordained to life
Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
-
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us
-
who walk not after the flesh
Paul clearly states that if there had been a law given which could have given life, then righteousness would have been by the law, and what Paul was implying is that the law, within itself, is dead works.
Galatians 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
-
for if there had been a law given which could have given life
What Paul is saying can easily be demonstrated over and over. Under the introduction to this Theme Study, there is a chapter titled, "What is Faith". There it is pointed out that man has a ‘by faith’ relationship to other beings. There are many settings in which rules and regulations are put in place to help man interact one with another. These rules and regulations are meaningless unless lived out by all! Let’s take a simple example of a household in which a list of chores is posted on a refrigerator.
This 'To Do:' list includes the following:
-
Wash the dishes
-
Clean the table
-
Take out the garbage
-
Make the bed
-
Vacuum the floors
-
Wash the clothes
-
Feed the dog
Two weeks after the chore list is posted, the sink is full, the table dirty, garbage overflowing, bed not made, floors filthy, clothes piled up and dog is starving. Why? The exact reason being is that the list of chores is ‘dead’ and no action was implemented!
Obviously, there are consequences when rules and regulations aren’t carried out and even when things are followed through on, there can be consequences if not carried out with proper attitude.
Shut Up Unto the Faith...
It is in this context that Paul writes of a ‘faith’, under the law, in which the circumcision was subject to, now being replaced by another ‘faith’, which should afterwards be revealed.
Galatians 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
-
But before faith came
-
we were kept under the law
-
shut up unto the faith
-
which should afterwards be revealed
The ‘faith’, under the law, was a ‘by faith’ relationship for righteousness, to be replaced by a ‘faith’ revealed to and through Paul, which is 'through faith'.
Romans 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
-
which shall justify the circumcision 'by faith'
-
and uncircumcision 'through faith'
Fear and Faithful Obedience
Old Testament righteousness was a living experience. The whole key to OT righteousness, under the Mosaic Covenant, was that the Israelites were to provide the life manifested in keeping and doing the law. As being stated within this Theme Study, the Mosaic Covenant covenanted for righteousness and faithful obedience was the determinate outcome.
Deuteronomy 6:24-25 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. 25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.
-
the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes
-
to fear the LORD our God
-
it shall be our righteousness
-
if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God
-
as he hath commanded us
Deuteronomy 30:15-18 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; 16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. 17 But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; 18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.
-
I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil
-
In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God to walk in his ways
-
and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments
-
that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it
-
But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them
-
I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it
God’s provision of righteousness, under the law, was a packaged deal consisting of commandments, coupled with the expectation of fear and heart felt faithfulness, on behalf of Abraham’s seed to which covenants were established.
Exodus 19:3-8 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.
-
Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying
-
Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel
-
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people
-
These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel
-
Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him
-
And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do
-
Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD
Contradictions and Confusion
The Hypocrisy Behind Much Teaching
There is much hypocrisy, contradiction and confusion in the handling of passages and subjects, regarding the law, as to what its function was or wasn’t. More often than not, focus is put on one thing or the other, while ignoring the context which combines the two. The epitome of this example is a preacher preaching on loving God, using Deuteronomy 6:4-5 as their text or encouraging parents to instruct their children, based on Deuteronomy 6:7-8. While preachers teach themes or threads, within the scriptures, many within the pews are probing the lines in between searching answers to questions that certain texts raise. How often does a message center on passages of familiarity surrounded by text or subjects often avoided?
Deuteronomy 6:1-9 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: 2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
-
these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you
-
that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it
-
That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life
-
Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee
-
thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
-
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart
-
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children
A lot of scripture is read without being read. What is meant by this is that passages are often read without understanding or discernment, often looking for mere spiritual applications. When text is taken seriously, the reader has several options. Obey what is written or discern to whom it is written. If there’s no discernment, then often what is read is met with contradiction and confusion. Frequently, something is preached, from behind the pulpit, that is met with some skepticism simply because application doesn’t seem to fit the context. Example can be taken from the passage above.
There would be no argument that we are to love the LORD our God with all our heart, soul and might and that Christian parents are directly responsible for bringing up their children in the things of the Lord. However, the context demands obedience to the commandments, statutes, and the judgments commanded to Israel and disobedience to such brought cursing, persecutions and displacement to Israel. The average Christian would be challenged to list the Ten Commandments, so would it be reasonable to believe they would obey? How about the 600 plus other commandments? These commandments were Israel’s righteousness and heart felt obedience, coupled with fear, was expected in observing them.
The reality is that not only isn’t the law the provision for our righteousness today, but the ordinances, in which Israel were to hide in their heart to act out in obedience, were nailed to the cross! On top of this, further instruction was given to Gentiles NOT to be judged thereby.
Colossians 2:13-16 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
-
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross
-
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days
Paul's epistle to the Galatians was a strong rebuke to those who were wanting to put themselves back under law... "This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?" Galatians 3:2-3
The whole point being made here is that instruction and expectation given to one group of people, within the bible, isn’t necessary instruction and expectation for another! What is to motivate one group of people, to love God, may not be the same motivating factor for another group of people.
2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
-
For the love of Christ constraineth us
-
because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead
-
And that he died for all, that they which live
-
should not henceforth live unto themselves
-
but unto him which died for them, and rose again
This chapter has dealt mostly with defining the compound makeup of the righteousness which is of the law. Israel was in a ‘by faith’ relationship with the LORD, meaning that as long as Israel kept up to her part of the deal, in acceptance of covenant terms, she was blessed. However, as I am sure that the reader is well aware of, Israel repeatedly broke those terms. What that disobedience looked like and how God dealt with it, on both a national and individual basis, are covered in chapters titled, "sinned in the law", "doers of the law shall be justified" and "circumcision justified by faith".
Israel’s Failure Under Law
Israel’s failure, under law, is shown in much more detail in chapter titled, "circumcision justified by faith". Obviously, one, of the two components, broke down in the ‘by faith’ relationship Israel had with the LORD. This chapter closes with two passages that points to that breakdown and we’ll let it up to the reader to cipher which, of these two components, attributed more to this breakdown.
Isaiah 1:2-5 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. 3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. 4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. 5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. Isaiah 1:13-15 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. 14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. 15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
-
I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me
-
Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting
-
Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them
Romans 9:31-32 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
-
But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness
-
hath not attained to the law of righteousness
-
Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law
