Personal

Testimony

During my elementary school years, I attended both Lutheran and Methodist churches and vacation bible schools sponsored by each. When in the eighth grade I was within weeks of being catechized in a Lutheran church before our family moved to my Dad’s homestead in a mountainous rural area in PA. Having then Amish neighbors, I’ve actually have had a lot of personal interaction with the Amish community throughout most of my life. During my Junior and High School years, I had again attended both Lutheran and Method churches. Towards the end of my senior year, after going through another catechism class, I joined membership in a Methodist church. Within a year from that, I actually came to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ while attending a non-denominational Christian technical college in Longview, Texas. I then transferred, along with three friends, to a Christian university associated with a Baptist church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Here, was to train for the pastorate. In the mid 70’s, I married and moved to Columbus, Georgia, where I was ordained in a Baptist church, taught in a Christian school and functioned as an associate pastor. My first teaching assignment, in a series of Sunday evening services, was to conduct an extensive study on cults.

To say for sure, by then I was beginning to get a real feel of the diversity within the religious and denominational system. Before going to Longview, Texas, I can’t recall if I even knew what a Baptist Church was? Nor, was I aware of many of the other religions and denominational churches. I doubt that I even knew what a Catholic was at that time?

After leaving Columbus, Georgia, I returned North to have pastored a couple of small Baptistic churches. By the mid to late 80’s I stepped out of the pastorate, as a full-time profession, finding it hard to be faithful to denominational teachings, while at same time trying to remain true to the scriptures. Though getting involved in secular work, over the years I’ve been involved in Christian ministry, in one facet or another, both in preaching and teaching.

Purpose

One cannot truly defend his own positions on doctrine until he understands the argument of those who differ! For in understanding those who disagree, will either strengthen or correct your own interpretation of the scriptures. The Bereans received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so (Acts 17:11). Of course, one has to have a base-line and mine was a King James Bible from the very beginning. I am a conservative by nature and in convictions, both politically and doctrinally. I’ve witnessed great deterioration in both our country and churches since the 1970’s.

Today, there’s more emphases on meeting the social needs of professing Christendom than on sound doctrine that Christians need for in this age in which we live. I quickly learned that denominationalism is a leading factor in prohibiting biblical knowledge and spiritual growth. A purpose of this project is to provide answers to questions that, quite frankly, the typical pastor today has no answers for. Like in politics, preachers are often more protective of their denomination and pay check than on the scriptures. Many sermons preached today are on commentaries, written about the bible, then on the bible itself. Goal within this project is, while trying to remain true to the scriptures, give answers to questions that many Christians long for that’s not been provided from within the church.

Biggest Pet Peeve

Top on my list of pet peeves, are those who hold a bible over their heads declaring… thus sayeth the Lord, to then turn around in the next breath correcting same book!

Greatest Challenge

My biggest challenge is that of abiding by the rules of English grammar! I was tempted to follow that first sentence with a smiley emoticon, but resisted that temptation. In reality, this has and will continue to be a life-time mission. Putting aside life experience, in of itself, hundreds of hours are invested here. Thankfully, technology has improved over the years, since gathering material together since the 1980s, to originally write a book. Having said that, I was but an average student in school with English grammar being one of my greatest challenges. Though much time as been spent in proof reading and grammar construct, I’m sure I have failed miserably. I trust I’ve been able to make my points, but more importantly, that supportive scripture becomes the real teacher. This has been written without the aide of a proof reader and any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!
